As he rolled the stamp back and forth across the inkpad he said, “Welcome”—he thumped it down in three places on the paper—“to the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service. I first venture off to Wikipedia to meet Janus, but then landed upon an interview with the author explaining the god's significance in the book, which most of us totally missed out on, myself the main sleeper on the bunk bed!

Stedman skilfully weaves sensual descriptions of ocean sprays and fresh sea air to create a truly beautiful backdrop to the narrative. We got small bits and pieces of the story from her perspective, more towards the end than in the first half, but character representation was definitely weighted towards Tom, and while Tom was a fine character, the story was not just his alone. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. I suppose, at a pinch…” he conceded, the words coming with great difficulty, “I could—leave the signal until the morning. So Isabel floats further and further into her world of divine benevolence, where prayers are answered, where babies arrive by the will of God and the working of currents. I welcome comments from everyone, especially people who liked the book, because maybe enough of those will convince me to read it back - I'm big on second guessing myself. The SS Prometheus worked its way along the southern shores of Australia, stopping at various ports on its run between Sydney and Perth.I gifted a copy of The Light Between Oceans to my sister for Christmas and she read it on an international flight. She visits after hearing that Isabel has been dying of cancer, but had already died one week earlier. I will admit to a strong dislike of Isabel, but it's possible to hate a character and still love a book.
