About this deal

I received a Kaweco Supra Fireblue on loan a few weeks ago. Thank you to Appelboom for lending it to Well-Appointed Desk!

With the Supra or Liliput you post by screwing the cap onto screw threads at the end of the pen, which is very secure. I did note that the screw threads seem to be longer than normal. It takes about three turns to post the Supra or Liliput, and almost four turns to cap or uncap either model. Finally, the pen can be used without the middle section, unposted. This gives a pen that is just 9.5 cm (3.75 inches) long and weighs 31 g (1.1 ounces). This was by far my least favorite setup. A Beginner’s Guide to Fountain Pen Inks: What Inks to Buy? What Inks to Avoid? To Clean or Not to Clean? The TenRules. On the flip-side, of course, I'm sure that people who are happy with coding are going to do some truly amazing things with zscript. My Stainless Steel Liliput came with a medium nib and the Fireblue with an extra-fine, both of which were good writers. Liliput nib units are the same as those on the AL-Sport, AC-Sport and Dia2 line, and can be easily unscrewed and interchanged with the nib units of any of those pens. Not with the larger Supra, of course.

The Supra has a screw-in metal extension to make the pen longer, which can be removed if you want a shorter pen. In the above photo, the Supra is full-size with the extension between the section and the rest of the pen body. But anyone who has heard of Kaweco’s ‘fireblue’ range before will immediately recognise this pen. Legend has it that the Kaweco CEO personally blowtorches the steel body of these pens to bring out the subtle blues and greys — and occasional oranges — of the fireblue finish. This is the interesting part of the story... blue coloring by annealing is well known to all the watch aficionados out there. Parts of the movement or the hands of the watch are blued by heating. Different temperatures resulting in different colors of the workpiece. And exactly this is how it works with the Liliput: In the process of annealing heat is applied for each Fireblue piece individually by manual labor. In color matching caps, bodies and sections are put together afterwards so every single Liliput Fireblue is one of a kind. I’ll start talking about the Supra, which is newer. The Supra is a brass fountain pen based on the design of the Liliput but made wider and longer.

Both these steel Liliputs have a nice heft, weighing a few grams more than the Kaweco AL-Sport. That’s a comfortable weight for me for writing, but makes for a solid-feeling pen that seems able to withstand the slings and arrows of carry-around use. For deliveries to the Rest of the World, Royal Mail suggests up to 21 working days for parcels to arrive. This allows more flexibility in size. So far I’ve shown the Supra closed, open and posted, open and unposted. The fourth size is closed with only one body section. Branding is minimal — just a laser-etched logo in the domed steel of the pen end, and a little more round the barrel. I love the size and diameter of the Supra. However, because I don’t have huge hands, a 40 gram pen is too heavy for me to write with for hours straight. But I found the Supra surprisingly comfortable for shorter writing sessions. So, does the annealing "patina" disappear with time and use or is the process permanent and there is no way that it could fade and such a worry is pure silliness?

Because the shorter Supra is a mini-fountain pen, it’s designed to be used posted. So here is the shorter Supra posted, next to the Liliputs. That brass object at the bottom is the Supra’s extension tube.

In this respect it’s like the Schon, but unlike the Schon the Supra is actually a convertable, extendable pen, too. The Supra nib unit is a bigger version of the convenient screw-in/screw-out nib unit found on all Kaweco pens above the basic range. My Supra had a fine nib, which was extremely smooth with good ink flow. The combination of large nib and weighty pen made the Supra a really fun writer. The future generations would be so grateful, sirgilbert They would surely endow you with an annealed cenotaph. They would stop giving Oscars, which would be replaced with meticulously lacquered Gilberts. From here, the pen can be posted without the middle section, making it 13.5cm (5.25 inches). Just slightly longer than the pen with the middle section, unposted. This was my favorite setup – the pen weighs 39 g, so most of the weight remains, but the length is great for my hand. This Fireblue pen is constructed from tempered steel and features a spectacular finish. Each pen is hand-torched, giving it a unique pattern of enchanting colors ranging from light brown to purple to blue. Due to this color variation, the pen you receive will have its own unique look which may differ in color from the pens pictured.
