Another popular dessert that features frosting rosettes are cupcakes. To pipe a rosette onto a cupcake, use the same Wilton 1M rosette piping tip. It is also fun to pipe leaves onto the cupcakes and to experiment with two-toned rosettes.

Rosettes will work with a wide variety of frosting recipes, from simple American buttercream to silky Italian meringue. Even something like cream cheese frosting will work, provided it is not too soft. With this decorating technique, you want to use a frosting that is medium consistency–stiff enough to hold its shape once piped, but not so stiff that the edges are ragged and uneven. For this reason, store-bought canned frosting won’t work–it’s too soft to make nice rosettes. 🧁Here are a few of my favorite frosting recipes to try: After you first fill your piping bag, make sure to squeeze out some of the frosting onto a plate or parchment paper if using more than one color of icing. This allows each color to fill the tip so that it shows up in your piped buttercream rosette. Using the bag-in-bag method allows you to easily switch between sizes of rosettes in the same color. Insert a piping tip into a piping bag, and insert the frosting cylinder into the piping bag, snipped-side down. Squeeze a little frosting out, until you can see several colors coming out of the tip. You’re ready to decorate!

I like to get closet o the frosting I just piped out. When you go for the next edge around the first edge try to go as close as you can with “the nozzle /side” of the piping bag to the first edge layer, like you are pushing the frosting to the center with “the side of the nozzle/ bag”, by pushing the side of your piping bag to the edge you just made. This makes your rose more visible, and it pushes the rose edge up and the middle (the dot you made first) disappear into the center, just like a real rose.
