About this deal

Sure, folks like Charlie Hodge are depicted and even highlighted by name for a short scene but it’s nothing like the 1979 TV Movie “Elvis” where Charlie Hodge played a larger role and actually played himself. Elvis’s parents, Vernon Presley ( Richard Roxburgh) and Gladys Presley ( Helen Thomson), want their son to be happy and are very supportive of his pursuit to be a musical performer as we see here in the film. Alongside that, Luhrmann makes an awful lot of use of sound effects and there’s a beautiful dynamic range to them, again utilising the same balanced tonal mix of the music. Viva Australia: Recreating Iconic Locations for ELVIS (HD, 7:26) – A featurette that showcases the impressive nature of the sets and transformed locations to make a film shot in Australia give off 1950s-70s Americana. Warner’s HEVC-encoded 2160p transfer includes all three flavors of high dynamic range – HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision.

Motion is smooth and natural with no issues of distortion resulting from any rapid actor or camera movement on screen. For as popular and accessive his life and music were to his fans over numerous decades, the ins and outs of his personal life and music contrast remain uneasy, turbulent, and off-kilter.One thing that really sets this film apart from any other biographies about Elvis is the fact that the actor here (Austin Butler) actually performed the songs himself for the most part mixed in with some of the real-life Elvis. The main cast and crew talk about the inspirations of Elvis and how the King's style was brought to the big screen. Essentially, what Baz Luhrmann describes is that they used different lenses for the three different decades that are primarily focused on Elvis Presley’s life here. In terms of audio quality, this Dolby Atmos mix almost feels like you’re getting to be at an Elvis concert during the latter half of the film comprised of the 1970s Las Vegas performances. costumes dazzle, as well as the mostly inviting and warm-toned scenes set during our main character's younger days (above).

Bottom: 4K digital with HDR toning is much more dramatic, with a balanced grayscale from shadows to highlights.

Yet their relationship somehow works – that sense of the struggle for the very essence of Presley, the caging of him in his Vegas residency at the expense of the world tours he so desperately wanted to undertake, is drawn powerfully and both actors sell it wholly. So, that means first with the 1950s, then with the 1960s and 1970s decades the lenses changed to give it a unique visual style. No, its not an impression or mimicry, there’s a desire to give this thing a soul and it just emanates a vibe throughout the film that sucks you and impresses you from time to time with some nontraditional choices. When set in the '50s, the film grain is on display and the color palette is more neutral and vague with yellows, tans, and greys on display.

Some use of modern music might catch some’s attention and feel a bit off but I personally found it to work. The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. And most of the natural film grain from the VistaVision large-format Technicolor three-strip negative had been scrubbed away. But it also retains all those other benefits of digital capture – a rock solid image, with no judder seen at all, a perfectly consistent viewing experience and no sign of print damage whatsoever.

A real surprise is that Paramount ported over the 4K master with Dolby Vision and HDR10 toning for the majority of the digital platforms. There are some obvious things in the film that are not factual but have been fictionalized or changed. The transfer pops from the minute the stylized Warner logo first appears, which only improves from there, with the bright lights of the Las Vegas skyline, dazzling costumes, etc.Less successful is Hanks’ Parker – underneath a mountain of prosthetics and a wandering and very questionable accent, Parker veers between having an honest love for the boy he found on that Hayride stage back in 1953 and his pantomimic manipulation and exploitation for personal gain, and there’s just something about the role that never quite lands. He is also the Moderator/MC of the Live Podcast Stage and on the Podcast Awards Committee for PopCon (popcon.
