About this deal

A strong cinematic feel soaks the album from the opening "Tunnel Of Love" (featuring a fitting extract form Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel Waltz") which depicts a carnivalesque tale of romance and possible loss through "Romeo and Juliet" and the amusingly playful "Skateaway". Making Movies was later certified platinum in the United States and double-platinum in the United Kingdom by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) respectively. The extra-wide 45RPM grooves on this edition provide previously unattainable detail, information, and soundstaging. It appears mine was done at the Toronto plant and have seen decent pressings from there on occasion.

The mofi version of this album makes you LOVE to just listen to the music, whereas the orig UKs are better to let it spin and rock out to because the detailed instrument separation isn't as accessible to listen to. The title of the album is taken from a line in the song " Skateaway" and from the outtake "Making Movies. Mastered from analog tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP set of Making Movies breathes with reference-caliber airiness, spaciousness, dynamics, and separation. It’s not a Mofi 45 or UHQR but it’s as good or better than the 33 ⅓ versions that come from those efforts. Skateaway" is another brilliant song, the only song on which Knopfler really shows us what a great guitar player he is.However, this Mofi does an unbelievable job of separating the instruments to let them all breathe and give them space. Dire Straits also benefits from crucial contributions from Bruce Springsteen pianist Roy Bittan and the departure of rhythm guitarist David Knopfler. Their music was becoming more complex and so was Mark Knopfler's songwriting: 4 of the album's 7 tracks are running over 5 minutes. The song is filled with romantic projections, though in real life most women would run away from a creepy carnival worker hitting on them. The song “Skateaway” has an interesting backing rhythm and actually contains the title words of the album ‘Making movies’.

After owning several early Canadian copies and one UK copy, this one has more dynamic and energy, with perfect tonal balance and extension on both end. Side two of the vinyl disc is a bit of a letdown following three strong tracks but the instrumentation does make up for that shortcoming. He contacted Jimmy Iovine after hearing Iovine's production on the song " Because the Night" by Patti Smith—a song co-written by Smith and Bruce Springsteen.

Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term. The lengthy but wonderful "Tunnel of love" has been a stage favorite for a long time, listen to the wonderful repeating 'Girl you look so pretty to me' chorus halfway through. Produced by Jimmy Iovine and Knopfler, the record – which contains many Springsteen-esque elements – features the cleanliness and clarity that have long been Dire Straits trademarks.
